West Gate Tunnel Support
Manufacturing facilities supporting major Victorian infrastructure project
— Project Overview
The Benalla Manufacturing Facilities project involved the construction of three large-scale industrial buildings developed to support segment production for the West Gate Tunnel Project in Melbourne. Located in Benalla, Victoria, the facilities were purpose-built to accommodate high-volume manufacturing operations associated with major infrastructure delivery.
JKR Group Australia Pty Ltd was engaged to complete the structural steel erection works for the precast shed, match cast shed and warehouse facility.
Each structure incorporated clear span portal framing designed to support 20-tonne overhead crane systems, requiring precise installation and alignment across all three facilities. In total, the project involved the erection of approximately 1,740 tonnes of structural steel.

— Project Challenges
- Large-Scale Structural Installation The project involved erection of substantial steel volumes across multiple industrial buildings within a coordinated construction program.
- Clear Span Structural Design Each facility utilised clear span portal structures designed to accommodate heavy overhead crane systems, requiring precise structural alignment and installation accuracy.
- Program Coordination Delivery of three separate facilities within the broader infrastructure manufacturing program required efficient sequencing and coordination between construction activities.
— Solution
JKR Group implemented a staged erection methodology to manage steel installation efficiently across all three facilities while maintaining program requirements and construction sequencing.
The team coordinated lifting operations, steel assembly, and structural alignment to ensure each building was delivered in accordance with design tolerances and overhead crane requirements. Careful planning and site coordination enabled safe and efficient delivery of the full structural steel package.
